Total: 24 suspect player roles, and 200 duplicated non-suspect team player roles = 224+ players in the game!

Important note: With just the main game, you can cover 16 suspects and 50 players on the two teams = 66 players.  But it will be optimal to add the expansion pack #1 suspects for larger groups, so you have 8 more suspects (24 total) and multiple teams.

WHAT ARE EXPANDABLE TEAMS AND HOW DO THEY DIFFER FROM EXPANSION PACK PLAYERS?

If up to 224 players were cast as suspects, chaos would break out, and most participants would likely lose interest once the investigation began. After all, even real detectives don’t want to sift through that many suspects!

To keep the experience fun and engaging, the investigation must stay manageable. Large-group mystery parties are an absolute blast—but they require a different approach than an intimate gathering of 15 players. The solution? Everyone receives the same style of materials for all four rounds, but each participant in the teams is woven into the story in a slightly different way.

Expansion packs introduce unique suspect roles that integrate seamlessly with the main game cast. Only the host knows which players are required and which are optional—a feature designed to make managing the guest list flexible and stress-free.

The game developer determines how much information the host can access to prevent any unfair advantage once the investigation begins. Sure, a host could pay extra attention to the required players from the start—but since the host is also juggling the responsibilities of running the party, trust us, it all balances out.

Everyone in the game has a motive to kill the victim—that’s no spoiler! Round One focuses on establishing those motives, while the beginning of Round Two deepens the backstories and introduces a few critical clues. Once the investigation is underway, most suspects will be quickly ruled out (otherwise, frustration sets in quickly), and the group will narrow in on the prime suspects—typically the required players or a subset of them. Hence, everyone is on an even playing field when it comes to analyzing clues and solving the mystery.

Some of our games, such as this one, can accommodate large groups by utilizing expandable teams. The expandable games will be designated within the description, the additional information section, and the host character lists for the main game and expansion packs. This game features up to seven expandable teams (when both packs are purchased) and can accommodate up to 224+ players – 24 suspect players and 200 team members, divided into 8 teams with each team having a designated leader who is also a suspect.

HOW EXPANDABLE TEAMS WORK:

A specified player(s) is designed to lead the (optional) team(s) during the game. Or, these characters may be played as solo players – adding any number of teams is entirely optional. But if you add teams – it’s as if the team leader got the invitation and decided to bring along friends, family, or colleagues (this varies). Assume (in the story) that these tag-along guests don't know anyone at the party. What would they speak to the other partygoers about? Well, they have a mutual friend (their team leader), so these players have game cards that contain their team leader's story.

For example, Pat Couric brings along the news crew, which includes gender flexible (irrelevant gender), non-suspect, duplicated character roles. The team players under Pat’s leadership will have information regarding Pat’s storyline in their materials, which they can use to mingle and discuss with others (or they can play strictly as a team and stay with Pat). Pat is a suspect in the murder, but the team players are not.

The expandable players have duplicated cards, as you will download a file from your account and make copies for each team member with the downloadable version.

With the boxed version, you will receive teams prepared with the same type of materials as the rest of the players. However, the content on their cards will be duplicated, including instructions on how to play as their team and having information about their lead character and the story from their point of view. They are second-tier players because they do not have unique character names or stories, but play the game like everybody else. It’s best to assign your most shy/reserved players to these roles or players who are last-minute or unsure RSVPs. Do not assign your most outgoing and dependable players to these roles.

DO EXPANDABLE TEAM MEMBERS GET UNIQUE CHARACTER NAMES?

No, they will wear a name tag that has their general team name on it. We do not assign character names because once you do, they will be investigated during the investigation round, and this will eventually draw more attention to their second-tier status when you must instruct the players not to consider these characters – which you will inevitably have to do, as there’s no time to investigate more than the 24 suspects in this game (when both packs are purchased). If you tried that, your players will rage quit.     Therefore, it’s best to come clean from the start that they are non-suspect team members. On the other hand, they receive all the same game materials as everyone else; they investigate as individuals and submit guesses of whodunit, just like all the other players.  They differ in that they don’t input new information into the game, except perhaps some insight into their lead character, who is a suspect in the murder.
