Answers to the Questions:
Chances are, you didn't enter your email address correctly when you ordered your game. This happens every now and then. So, just email us with your information (name, address and phone number that you ordered the game under) and we'll send you the game via email within 24 hours (typically sooner)- no worries!
The host should
absolutely play one of the characters in the game! We want our host to have an equal amount of fun and intrigue as his or her guests! And our parties are SO easy to host - you will have plenty of time to play! You can also choose any character that you would like to play from each of the character lists.
Now...the exception is with a couple of our older games (1970s, Totally Tubular 1980s)that might already designate who the host is to play but we've found that designating a host is limiting and isn't necessary. In these two games, there are some redundant host instructions on the clue cards of the designated hosts but you can simply tell any guests playing these roles to ignore them.
So the answer is definitely YES - the host should play along with the rest! So try not to look at the clue cards when you are preparing the game but better yet - have our staff prepare your kit in a Party Ready Pack so you can be on an even playing field - as far as surprises go - with your guests! The host doesn't even have to know 'who' the victim or murderer are before the game!
Quite the contrary! As far as the victim being a character - in the history of our business with our customers and market tests, etc. we found that people 'enjoy' being the victim in our games. We do not take anyone - especially the victim - out of game play whatsoever. We believe in fun for everyone and that is why the victim doesn't know they are the victim and the murderer doesn't know they are the murderer - until it is time to know.
As far as the victim goes during the game - this is the character that gets the 'most' attention throughout the game. In Round One - they are very heavily into the story line and might even start to fear that they are the victim. In Round Two- they are notified via their clue card that they are the victim and all they need to do is wear a victim sign and then 'play as a ghost of their character.' The instructions ask them to not speak and communicate in other ways (this has proven to be hysterical) but play along with the rest of the players as usual. You can also elect as the host to have them 'speak as a ghost' or just play normally. As long as they're wearing the victim sign - they're designated as the victim.
We also have optional items to put with the victim kit which are crime scene tape (they can decorate themselves with it), white face makeup (to put on their face because they're now a ghost) and we even have a victim t-shirt that they can put on to further distinguish themselves and it doubles as a party souvenier. So being the victim at one of our murder mystery parties is a very, very good thing...especially if you love attention!
If you order a downloadable item, a "Download" button will be displayed on the Order Confirmation page next to the item description. The button has green, flashing lights by it and it's the same one pictured on our downloadable item webpage. Just click this button to begin downloading the item.
Alternatively, you can come back to the Order Status page later (even from a different computer) and download the item. You can always get to your Order Status page using the URL from the Order Confirmation email, or by using the Order Status link at the top of Yahoo! Shopping.
Note: There is no time limit within which a buyer must download a downloadable good they have purchased. You can always get to the download link from the Order Status page, but you will be required to enter the credit card number used but will not be charged again for the item.
We 100% guarantee that our files are not corrupt and that they are available as listed. Our business survives on referrals and repeat customers and we take extreme pride in our products!
Internet downloading is a complex process, however. Depending on your internet browser settings, you may only be able to download the first item. Either because you leave the original download screen and the browser believes you are finished...and then resets. Or...your browser doesn't allow pop ups and the downloaded pdf file is set to come up as a pop up. In either case, you can always try going to the LINK in your email confirmation and downloading it by following the instructions at the top of the page (after clicking the link). Another suggestion is to try another computer as it might have different internet browser settings.
If all else fails...just contact us via email and we'll respond with your file via email within 24 hours - most likely much sooner.
ANSWER: In general, the invited guests are assigned a character by the host. The guests are to dress up in costume and play the role of that character during the party. In each party, there is going to be a mystery and the guests will solve 'whodunit.'
An optional pre-game round can be played and this round entails the host sending out the pre-game clues (sometimes there are tasks involved) to the guests either via email or by snail mail. These are optional and do not affect the mystery and only lead to pre-game excitement.
The party night - the guests arrive in character and the party is generally separated into 3 rounds - an ice-breaking cocktail hour, the actual dinner (optional), and a coffee and dessert hour.
Each round is separated by the host giving out sealed clue-containing envelopes to each guest. The guests read the clues and then mingle with the other guests and implement their clues. Each round is about thirty minutes and there is an optional activity/ game to be played at the conclusion of each round.
Round one is typically the ice-breaking round where the characters get to know each other.
Round two is often separated into pre-murder and post-murder clues. The murder (or other non-murder mystery) will happen in the middle of this round and the victim will exit the room and come back as a ghost - with white face paint/powder and a victim 'sign' that will give some clues as to the crime, but not many! The victim can still play the game as normal... with the exception that they cannot speak as they are a ghost! The post murder clues will deal with the actual investigation of the crime. The guests will investigate the murder by mingling and interrogating each other and then they will each submit their guesses of 'whodunit' at the conclusion of this round. In some games, there might be a forensic analysis report to include in the investigation.
Round three is the big reveal. After accusing each other, the characters will sit in a circle and one-by-one, reveal their involvement in the murder. The host can elect to give a trophy or trophies to the winner(s) who guessed correctly. We have tons of award certificates available in the Mystery Party Prop Emporium in the Game Extras section of our site.
We have one game designed like that - Doom Mansion.
However, we tend to disagree that murdering one of your guests isn't fun for the victim! Quite the contrary!
It builds an added layer of suspense when the guests don't know who will be murdered. Why would you really want to attend a party where the mystery has already occurred? Not much fun!
In Round Two - the victim will be notified they are the victim - not even the host has to know who it is - and they'll leave the room via a cue to 'become' the victim - minimally by wearing a victim sign but you can go all out and have them paint their face white with makeup, wear a victim T-shirt and decorate themselves with crime scene tape - it's hilarious when they walk back in the room. From that point on - they are to communicate in other ways than speaking (optional but funny) because they are a 'ghost' - but you can allow them to speak - as long as they keep their victim sign on. They're not taken out of the game at all! In fact, they're the highlight of the game! We've done tons of research and found that the players that have played the victim in the past 'hope they get to be the victim again in the next murder mystery game!'
We would never want to take anyone out or make anyone feel like they were not important in the game or to the story line - so that's how we are different than those other companies that take your guests out of the game after they are murdered.
All of our mysteries are formatted this way with the exception of Doom Mansion - which was done originally for a group of pre-teens who couldn't 'murder' one of their friends due to their age but wanted the 'clue game' parody. But we've had plenty of adults play this game as well and it's great fun! But we obviously prefer to make one of the guests a victim - it's the way to go!

ANSWER: We love for our lawyers to be bored! Please don't enter into a partnership with us without our knowledge! Countless times we have caught villains posting our games as events for sale through their company on their website. This is ILLEGAL to do so without our consent! Do the right thing and purchase a commercial license if you plan to make a profit on our games. There is no gray area here - if you are going to host this in a public venue for profit - you need a commercial license and you must abide by the terms of the license. We have the right to refuse service to anyone. If we find you are selling our games, not only will we take legal action against you but you will be banned from doing any further business with us. If we find that you are using our mystery parties illegally, we will take immediate legal action against you. We work very hard to make a superior quality product, so please do take advantage of us.
You are also not allowed to use our graphics on your website or on any type of promo materials without purchasing a commercial license and abiding by the terms set forth in the commercial / multi-use license. However, if you wish to use our graphics for a personal party - just email us and we'll be glad to give you permission to do so free of charge! Lots of folks have put our graphics on a cake top and it looks absolutely fabulous! Great idea!
ANSWER: After you have purchased the game, there are 2 ways in which you can receive it.
1. If you purchased the electronic download version of the murder mystery party game, immediately upon purchase, you are directed to a pdf file on a web page designated for you via a download button on the order confirmation page (see above FAQ for details). Download this pdf and save it on your hard drive - this is your game! Easy enough! If you accidentally navigate away from this page - no worries - just click on your order status page (from your confirmation email) and follow the directions to download the game.
- Download the latest version of Adobe Reader

2. If you elect to purchase the party ready pack for your murder mystery party game, we print and get your game 'party ready' for you! We will ship your game to you within 2-3 business days. You will receive the game at your doorstep depending on the UPS shipping method you choose during check out. The 'party ready pack' includes us cutting out your clues, stuffing them into clue envelopes, labeling each clue envelope for each round with the character's name and getting any game documents ready for your party (i.e. if you have charades included in your game kit, we will type the charade topics on a microprocessing program, print them, cut them out and fold them for you - everything should be a surprise and no hassle for the host! There are additional charges for those options as opposed to the electronic download version.
ANSWER: Of course! You have 2 options... you can add on characters to the list that go with the theme of the party. Give them some simple game-related clues - but nothing that would alter the mystery. Or, if you don't feel like doing it yourself, we will do it for you at $17.50 per character. There is a link to order custom characters in the 'game extras' section of our site. It takes up to 5-7 business days to complete your character(s) - depending on the author's cue.
ANSWER: Absolutely. You have two ways to accomplish this and only one needs discipline.
1. If you choose the electronic download or printed materials (not 'party ready'), when you cut the clues out and stuff them into the envelopes, make sure you do not read the clues - only look at the top line of each clue that gives the character and the round! (Or get someone not involved with the party to do this for you.)
2. If you elect the 'party ready' pack - no worries - the pack will arrive at your doorstep - ready to go with the clues safely snuggled inside of color coded and labeled envelopes for each round. Easy! All answer keys to any side games and any other 'game spoiling' items will be in sealed envelopes and labeled appropriately.
ANSWER: The children's scavenger hunts are geared to be in one location (i.e. a home) - for safety reasons and these are worked into our children's mystery parties. Most of the teen and adult scavenger hunts require vehicles for each team with an unlimited amount of teams - the host can decide. For a more memorable party, You can spruce it up a notch by hiring multiple limos to drive your teams around. We also have some scavenger hunts that are designed to be played in a neighborhood, an office building, any general building, and even a resort or amusement park!
ANSWER: Yes! In all of our games, there are optional activities that can be played during each round - some humorous, some challenging and all within the general theme of the game. Most of these activities could be considered a team building exercise.
ANSWER: The first thing to do is to carefully re-enter the card number. Most of the time, since you are entering so many numbers, it is a simple error. After you check that, call your bank to see if they have blocked this internet purchase as this is a rising problem - internet fraud - and a lot of banks are ramping up security on this and might have selected your transaction to block.
ANSWER: The electronic download files are in a PDF format. These can be read and printed with the free software - Adobe Reader. However, these files cannot be modified without the full version of Adobe Acrobat. You can get the free Adobe Reader or purchase Adobe Acrobat software at www.adobe.com.
The current up to date version of Adobe Reader is v 10. We highly suggest going to www.adobe.com and getting a free upload to update your Adobe Reader. ANSWER: Easy fix! Hotmail automatically directs all unrecognized e-mails to the Bulk / Junk e-mail folder. These are quarantined for a 5 day period and then deleted. Emails sent from our address at mymysteryparty.com will be one of these unrecognized emails. To get emails from us and to get future emails from us, you will need to add the mymysteryparty.com address to your contact list. You can do this a couple of ways:
1) From the bulk e-mail folder, select the mymysteryparty.com email and click the 'not junk' button above the listed emails in the junk/bulk folder.
2) Another way to get our address on the contact or safe list is to select 'options' in the upper right hand corner. Then click 'contacts', then click 'safe list.' On the 'safe list' page, type 'mymysteryparty.com' in the text box that requires you to add an address or domain name. Then, simply click 'add.' Once mymysteryparty.com has been added to the list of contacts in the safe list, you should be able to receive our emails.
ANSWER: The mystery parties are done in three rounds - cocktail hour, dinner, and then dessert. This typically takes about 1.5 - 3.0 hours and can take longer if the optional activities are played. See our 'time line of a mystery party' above.

ANSWER: A couple of problems might attribute to this. A mysterious 'bad download' can cause it - so try to right click and save the file to your hard drive again. Second, older versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader can cause problems. Go to the Adobe website and download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader - which is v 10.0 as of January, 2011.

We can always email you the pdf file if you simply cannot download it - no worries!!! Just email us and give us 24 hours to get it to you - and in most cases it will be in your inbox within an hour or two.
ANSWER: This can be done a few different ways.
1. You can arrange them on a table stuffed inside of color-coded, sealed, and labeled envelopes and announce to your guests when each round ends. The guests can get their new round envelopes from the table.
2. You can give all of the round clues to your guests as they arrive to the party and let them know that you will announce when to open each envelope. Be sure to announce to the guests at the beginning of the game to only read the clues for the current round.
3. If your friends are the sort that might need extra time to view their clues (i.e. social drinkers that will be toasty by the second round), you can send the round 1 clues in advance of the party. It is not advised to give the round 2 or 3 clues in advance of the party as in round 2 - the victim is revealed and in round 3- the murderer is revealed. You wouldn't want to spoil the mystery!
ANSWER: The rounds typically take about 30 minutes for the guests to mingle and sort through their clues. You, as the host, should be able to tell when the guests are done mingling with their clues and then you will announce the round has ended and give the next round of clues. The biggest problem that new host will encounter is rushing the game. Don't RUSH!! Take your time, relax and enjoy the mystery as it unfolds. There are also optional activities to do at the conclusion of each round.
ANSWER: You can choose to select your characters (6-10), theme, and weapons/mystery from our website and we can fill in the pieces for you with the plot for $649.99 or you can choose to have our authors write a complete custom mystery for you where we develop a theme and characters based on your needs - contact us for a quote. The prices go up with the author's time investment (i.e. having to research ancient Egyptian times, your company's history, etc.).
ANSWER: It takes a month to have a custom mystery written, however, in urgent situations, the minimum turn-around time is 2 weeks. You will be charged a fee for the quick turn around time (see our build a mystery site for 'rush my order' fees). To avoid this fee, mysteries can be completed in one month. Please note that about 50+ hours of author time and about 5+ hours of editing time go into creating a mystery. And this doesn't even count the research time if you wanted historically accurate facts in your mystery. If you wanted one done in a week...well, you can do the math on that one! We have done it for our customers because we care about your parties but please try to plan ahead if you can! Custom writing services may become unavailable at any time without notice as this depends on demand which varies seasonally.
ANSWER: In about a month when it is finished being created, we will send an Adobe PDF file via email to the email address you provide during checkout. We also offer the option of printing it for you and then mailing it to you in a party ready pack for an additional cost.
ANSWER: You can elect our option of a shipment of a 'party ready' kit. We will print the mystery and prepare the round clues into envelopes and ship them to you. You, as the host, will have no advantage over your guests in knowledge of the mystery! OR, just don't read any of the round clues if you purchased the downloaded kit - but this takes willpower - be strong!
ANSWER: Let's take our Casino Murder Mystery as an example. The mystery is 79 pages. We will print this for you in the manner that you choose - black & white, color or color upgrade on specialty parchment paper. With the downloaded version, you'll be responsible for printing your own kit so it's your ink and paper! If you had this printed at Kinkos on regular brite-white paper, you'd spend about 50-70$ for color - it fluctuates by location. The UPS Print Option is 49.95 - this is to have the UPS Store nearest you print the game kit in color for you. This does not include graphically labeled envelopes and the labor to assemble the kit, however.
We also provide envelopes - color coded and labeled with graphics for each round, each character. In this game, there are 18 characters and a pre-game and 3 rounds of game play = 72 envelopes. Since we give you 4 different colors of envelopes - if you were to purchase these at say a Hobby Lobby, you'd spend about $30-$40 at least because you can't custom purchase the exact amount of envelopes you need - you'll probably be forced to purchase 2 packages of each color and you'll have envelopes left over that you'll never use! Expensive!
Our staff will cut out your kit for you and slip the clue cards into the prepared envelopes and seal them for you. You'll receive this in individual packets for each round - and labeled with the appropriate round. So the day of the party, you just open up each packet and you're ready to go! You're guests will not be able to say that you had an advantage so you can play along with your group!
You will get separate host, guest and bonus game instructions.
Your bonus game documents will be prepared and put into designated envelopes and labeled for your convenience.
The victim sign and the murder weapon (when applicable) will be cut out by our staff.
The forensic report will be in a sealed envelope (not all games have forensic reports).
The charades are typed and printed for you (in the game kit it gives you topics and you are to write them on slips of paper if you choose to do this game). Our staff will also fold these charades for you.
The labor for a new host takes about 5 hours minimum - so our staff preparing the kit will save you a lot of time.
The name tags are printed for you. In the deluxe color upgrade kit (with the parchment paper) - the name tags are printed on self adhesive name badges (as opposed to paper that you will affix tape to the back of). For example, the name badge adhesive sheets cost about $26.99 for a box of 160! Again, you'll have plenty leftover!
So, we hope you can see that the party ready packs are worth the expense. However, if you have access to an economical printer and have the time to put the kit together, by all means it might not be the way for you to go and you should just get the instant download!
Our mysteries are of the highest quality.
We include bonus activities and the boxed games do not - they are usually a straight mystery party that will heavily rely upon your guests for improvizations.
In published games, the characters are typically given a 'booklet' with all of their clues. We prefer to give the clues in rounds in sealed envelopes to build excitement and intrigue. The guests won't know everything about the game and their character at the start of the game! When the guests are handed a new envelope for the round, it is exciting! And, the boxed games with clues in separate rounds still require lots of prep time - i.e. cutting out and stuffing clues into envelopes, sealing and labeling them, etc.
ANSWER: We've got the greatest combination of both! Ours are a hybrid and we take the best of both worlds. The guests are not left out in
the cold with just a character description in a booklet and not knowing what to do next - and on the flip
side, it's not a script like you're reading a play during a rehearsal either - who wants to do that? Boring! Confusing! Our games are highly interactive but 'directed' as each character gets a new clue card for each round with developing character information and clues / tasks for each character to perform, things to know, things to ask others, etc. Also, we give information for each character to conceal if they want to so they know how to react to others. If it is necessary to come out in the story line, it will in future clue cards! In real life you would know more about your character than others would. So, give our hybrid mystery parties a try - we're confident you'll be back for your next party...and your next...and your next....
ANSWER: Am I allowed to host a My Mystery Party as a fundraiser?
To host a My Mystery Party to raise money for a charity, My Mystery Party will waive the commercial fee to non-profit organizations. Upon payment of the mystery party, you will need to provide your non-profit ID number. The use of the mystery party for a public event without submitting your non-profit ID number to My Mystery Party via email or without purchasing a commercial / multi-use license is illegal. Also, for us waiving the commercial use fee, we require that you state on all advertising and game materials that the game was created by My Mystery Party. The website address must be included (www.MyMysteryParty.com). The game can only be used by your organization for one event. If you wish to use the game for another fundraiser, you will have to purchase the game again. My Mystery Party will donate up to four commercial fees per non-profit ID number per year. We do diligently monitor for illegal use of our games.
ANSWER: First - check your version of Adobe Reader. As of January 2011, you should have version 10.

Click here to download the newest version of Adobe Reader.
Older versions of Adobe Reader can cause compatibility issues with newer created pdf files - we use updated software to create our files. You might be able to print 'other' pdf files because they were created with older versions of Adobe Acrobat. 99 times out of 100 - this is the compatibility issue and it's an easy fix and one you should do anyway so you don't encounter this issue again with other pdf files! It's free, quick, easy and safe to do as Adobe offers trusted and quite necessary software. This should repair the issue.
If for any rare reason this does not fix your issue, contact our tech support reps at 1-800-714-3951 and they will be glad to help. You might have an odd setting on your software that is causing the issue and they can work around this for you. We've also found that sometimes, your printer is the culprit and not the software.
You can also contact Adobe's technical support at 800-833-6687 as it is actually an Adobe compatibility issue you are having - it's not a problem with our pdf file besides the fact it was created with newer software.
